Description:
I purchased this vintage oil painting of the Christ Child from a
Catholic Charities store so have no history of the piece. The
canvas and frame both show signs of age. I could find no
signature. The subject is a wonderful young Jesus with a soft
yellow halo, a bunch of daisies in one hand, and a little brown
bird perched on a finger of the other hand. The robe is a soft
cream color. The face is lovely with the sweet innocence of the
child.
I had a verbal appraisal by the International Society of
Appraisers. I was told it was late Victorian 1890-1910 era. It was
probably painted by an amateur for a family event like a baptism
or first communion. They felt the painter had more talent than
the average amateur of this period and that the painting was
very well done. The value range I was given was $400 to $500.
I have seen an old water-stained print with a very similar subject
at a local antique mall. It was marked © Campbell Prints NY and
7732 Printed in the USA. This company produced reproductions
of paintings in the late 19th and early 20th century. I assume
this painting might be based on a well know painting of that
period. The condition is good with no problems or damage to
report. There are some crackle lines and one area in the top
corner that is a little shinier. This might suggest some
restoration but the appraiser said the condition was good. On
the back side the paper tape is peeling in spots and a piece of
string was used as the hanger. I will leave this for the buyer to
remove. I hope some collector will appreciate the charm and
warmth of this wonderful Victorian painting. Please write with
any questions about the painting.
