Description: This distinctive vase has been inspired by the pre-Columbian patterns from the cultural heritage of the ceramic artist, Paula Gutierrez of Nicaragua. Created from Nicaraguan clays gathered by hand, the design along the top of the vase is called “greca de trenza precolumbina,” which translates as “pre-Columbian braid fret” and is directly inspired by Mayan designs of the ancient past. The pot is first formed by hand and fired to a lustrous black. The designs are then carved out of the pot by hand, which reveals the earthen brown of the base clay to create the black and brown patterns in relief. The final result is a piece of art that is both indigenous and classic, a balanced and symmetrical reinterpretation of ancient Mayan influences.

Paula Gutierrez comes from a large family of 8 children, four of whom are also ceramicists. In 1988 she won first place in the Ministry of Culture Competition in Nicaragua, bringing much deserved recognition for her beautiful work. She and her brother exhibited this series of black geometric pieces at a Sevilla exhibition where they won a UNESCO prize in 1999. Paula says that she enjoys working with geometric patterns because she always liked math and exact sizes, shapes and measurements.

Preserving Cultural Heritage
First clay from the Nicaraguan hills are gathered by hand and worked with water to bring it to the right consistency to be thrown and shaped. Paula uses a foot powered potter's wheel to throw her pots and then dries each piece in the sun for a few days before painting each pot the lustrous black that is enhanced when fired in her kiln. But the work that makes this vase distinctive is done once the black pot is fully formed and fired. Using a variety of tools for carving, Paula must carve through the black clay to create the symmetrical and Mayan influenced pattern in relief. She has to work very carefully at this point, for any mistake in the carving and the pot is ruined and must be discarded.
