Description:
A tapestry wall hanging, hand-woven in maguey fiber by the celebrated American Kinetic artist, Alexander Calder (1898-1976),entitled "Circus". Calder had a lifelong fascination with the circus, which began in his mid-twenties when he first published illustrations in a New York journal of Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. It was in Paris in 1927 that he created a miniature circus with tiny wire performers, ingeniously articulated to walk tightropes, dance, lift weights and engage in acrobatics in the ring. This tapestry, which is another fascinating example of this artist’s wide-ranging skills, was supervised by Catalina Meyer for Bon Art. Dating from 1973, it has a woven signature and is numbered 82/100 with a silk label verso. It measures 84 in. X 56 in. and is in excellent condition. Shipping and insurance extra.
