Delphin Massier Majolica Jardiniere & Pedestal

Unavailable
This majolica jardiniere and pedestal by Massier dates from the 1890s or 1900s and is in excellent condition. It measures 65.5 by 27.5 by 27.5 inches (166.4 by 69.9 by 69.9 cm). Base of the pedestal measures 15.25 inches (38.7 cm) wide and deep. Opening of the jardiniere measures 15 inches (38 cm) across. Underside of the pedestal has the black painted marks "DELPHIN MASSIER VALLAURIS (A.M.)". Underside of the jardiniere has the same marks under glaze. The jardiniere features three large butterflies with rose blossoms and a faux marble base. The column-shaped pedestal features blooming thistles and grasses, and an octagonal shaped base with faux marble and stylized thistle decoration.
There is a restoration to a crack on the pedestal which is visible on the inside, and visible only in some places on the exterior. This crack may not have penetrated to the exterior surface near the base, as no crack nor repair is visible to the eye. This repaired crack is visible on the exterior of the pedestal in the area above the bright green organic decoration which surrounds the base of the pedestal. The quality of the restoration is very high, and we do not know its age. A careful inspection of the rest of the jardiniere and stand has revealed no other repairs. The only visible damage is a tiny flake chip or unglazed spot less than 1/8" across on the tip of one butterfly. This item resides with our client on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City and may be seen in person by appointment.
