Jacquard Coverlet,early to mid 19th century, signed " Charles Fehr Manufactorer Emaus Lehigh County Pennsylvania",see listing in "American Coverlets and Their Weavers", by Clarita S. Anderson, published by The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation-Ohio University Press, copyright 2002, ("Location: Emmaus, Lehigh Co., Pa., Extant coverlets: 1836-1845, Some undated, Corner Blocks: vary, but include his name, location, usually date, sometimes client's name, and sometimes "Manufactorer"; hand loomed of cotton and wool, blue, red and two shades of green, no tears, stains or holes, 3-4 small slightly worn spots, 72" X 84" not including fringe which is worn. In the 19th Century, up until the Civil War Americans liked bright colors and bold patterns in their homes. Coverlets of the era were woven on hand looms with Jacquard attachments by professional weavers. They were easier to acquire than entirely hand sewn quilts of unique design. Production was mostly in the Middle Atlantic and Mid-Western states. We have a collection of many coverlets in exceptional original condition. Please inquire.
