Beautifully engraved certificate from the Confederate States of America Loan issued in 1862. This historic document has an ornate border around it with a vignette of Christopher Memminger ( Secretary of Treasury for the Confederacy ) troops fighting in the background at the Battle of Shiloh. This item is hand signed by the Register of the Treasury and is over 141 years old. Criswell #111, Ball#148, 15 unused coupons attached at bottom not shown in scan. VF+
Certificate Vignette Christopher Gustavus Memminger was born in Württemberg, Germany. His family moved to South Carolina when he was still a child. After the death his his mother, he was adopted by Thomas Bennett (later Governor of South Carolina). He started his career as a lawyer. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed the Secretary of Treasury for the Confederacy (1861-1864). He resigned in 1864 and was blamed for the collapse of the Confederate credit.
