Bright steel, comprising burgonet with rounded one-piece skull with high roped comb, narrow bluntly-pointed peak, separate riveted neck-plate, and hinged single-plate cheek- pieces each flanged at the bottom to match the neck-plate and pierced centrally with five small holes over the ears, almain-collar of three-plates front and rear, hinged on the left and with keyhole and stud fastening on the right, the front plates each with medial ridge, the top edges turned and roped, with attached spaudlers each of five downward-lapping plates, the bottom plates with turned and roped edge, breast-plate in two parts with low medial ridge bluntly-pointed at the bottom and with elaborately roped prominent turn at the neck and along the edges of the moveable armhole gussets, the lower narrow lame flanged at the bottom and carrying turning pins for the attachment of the fauld, the main edges bordered throughout with pairs of later lining holes, detachable fauld of two upward-lapping plates with four overlapping plates below on each side flanking the rounded opening for the codpiece, and with recessed turned and roped bottom edges, the latter carrying turning pins for the detachable tassets of eight upward-lapping plates each, shaped to the thighs and with straight bottom edge, the plates throughout with central cusping on the upper edges and turned and roped main edges with double recessed borders, the main and left-hand group of fauld-plates, and six plates of the left tasset finely etched along the inner border with foliage and strapwork against a dotted ground and involving a pair of dolphins above the opening for the codpiece (some damage and pitting, the right-hand fauld plates and some tasset-plates later), together with an Eastern mail shirt of rounded riveted rings, thigh-length with wide opening front and back, and short sleeves, reinforced at the neck with incomplete leather thongs: on a textile-covered torso mounted on a metal stand. A mix of very fine mid-16th C and later 16th C munitions grade pieces. Provenance: John Waldman Collection, sold Bonham’s Arms & Amour, Knightsbridge, 26 November, 2008 for 11,400 GBP, including premium.
