Sullivan J. Wiley enlisted in Co. I, 8th Massachusetts Infantry (Salem Zouaves) in April, 1861 and served his 90 day enlistment in that regiment. He subsequently re-enlisted in Co. E of the 12th Maine Infantry. Grouping includes the following: Leather wrapped 24" x 14 ½" railroad trunk, stenciled in white paint “12th MAINE REG’T COMPANY E”. The leather is in good condition, showing the effects of travel and storage. Interior is lined with period blue plaid paper. Contained in the trunk is a framed albumen photograph of Sgt. Wiley in uniform in a seated pose. There is also a 1/6 plate tintype of Wiley in a shell jacket, showing a Pioneer insignia on the arm. An additional photograph is a pre-war 1/9 plate ambrotype of Wiley in civilian clothes. There is a sheet metal document tube containing his enlistment medical questionaire, Sergeant’s appointment certificate, and several receipts. Also included is a small japanned tin containing a collapsible pewter drinking cup, a Sheffield marked folding razor in fitted case, a silver ring with initials “SW”, and a Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry coat button (probably from his Salem Zouaves uniform). In addition is a small leather boot, four old Portland, Maine newspapers, and four books (2 inscribed to Wiley). The books are “American Farm Book”, 1858, “A Practical System of Bookkeeping”, 1855, a ledger book with period entries, and “History of the Salem Light Infantry 1805-1890", 1890. All items in very good condition, as stored in the trunk for over 100 years. A wonderful wartime grouping all identified to a Maine soldier. The 12th Maine saw action at Port Hudson, Deep Bottom, Winchester, Cedar Creek, and other smaller actions. The regiment lost 5 officers and 286 enlisted men due to action and disease during the war.
