"City Patterns" signed color lithograph by noted African-American artist Jewel Woodward Simon. One of her most famous works. Limited edition #4/25. Approx 20"X17" matted 24" X 20.5" .........JEWEL WOODARD SIMON (1911-1996) Painter, Sculptor, Printmaker, musician, songwriter, and civic leader. A native of Houston, Texas, she lived in Atlanta since 1939. She received the Bachelor of Arts degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Atlanta University and was the first African-American to be awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Atlanta School of Art. She studied painting under Hale Woodruff and sculpture under Alice Dunbar at Atlanta University. Mrs. Simon was a member and officer of the National Conference of Negro Artists since its inception in 1958. Along with her extensive interest in art, she served on the Board of Directors of GirlÂ’s Clubs of America, active with Church Women United, First Congregational Church of Atlanta, Black Artist of Atlanta, Board of Associates of Emory University School of Nursing, Design Commission of Atlanta, YWCA, Atlanta Artists Club, Alliance Guild, The Collectors, The High Museum of Art, Georgia Arts Council and Atlanta Arts Festival. She was married to E. L. Simon, Vice President of Atlanta Life Insurance Company and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Clark College.
