British Frank Dean Sheep Herding Watercolor

This watercolor painting on board, depicting a sheep herder tending to his flock, is by the British painter, Frank Dean (1865-1907). Board measures 12" by 18" and it resides under glass in a period frame measuring 23.25" by 29.25" by 3.75". Condition is good. There are no visible signs of foxing or other damage or repair. This work resides with our client in Larchmont and may be seen in person by appointment. Dean was a painter of landscapes and genre scenes. He studied at the Slade School of Art in London under Alphonse Legros (1837-1911). From 1882 to 1886 he studied in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre at the Julian Academie. He exhibited at the Athenaeum Building in 1882 and in 1887 at the Royal Academy in London. The most recent major auction sale of a painting by Dean occurred on April 19 2006 at Christie's in New York when lot 26, a watercolor measuring 20 by 30 inches, was offered with an estimate of $12,000-$18,000 and sold for $15,600.
