Lovely piece of tribal artwork, a (880mm/34.6 inches in length) Burung Kenyalang / Hornbill bird made in spectacular fashion from medium hardwood, adorn with typical Dayak motifs of Tree Of Life, Buah Berinjan / Creeper Vine & Mata Aso / Dragons Eye. Base of hornbill is decorated with an Aso Naga / Dragon. Circa 2000.

More beautiful in real life and a stunning collection for dining to guest hall to even your garden. Please do not expose it to outdoor weather as I have never done so, it will destroy the bird. The bird is detachable for easy handling, please view photos below to appreciate, thanks.

Such Kenyalang were used for ritual purposes placed at the Sadau before placing it at the Ruai / chief varendah.

A ceremony to drive away bad spirits is seen with head trophy or skull of the longhouse taken down from their clusters. Shortly after the skulls have been brought to the feast chiefs varendah, one man kills a chicken and smears its blood on the sacred hornbill statue. Rice wine is served and the feast begin. A very similar ritual to some of my old textiles, the pua kumbu.
