AUTHENTIC PAINTED BLANKET CHEST c. 1800-50 /
Painted furniture is one of the most beautiful expressions of FOLK ART. Today these examples of the FOLK ART, dating from 1750-1850, are collected not only as functional and highly decorative interior centerpieces, but as a solid investment into 21st Century. This is magnificent, circa 1800-50, hand dovetailed "six board" construction FOLK ART blanket chest, decorated with floral bouquets on cream / yellow background (flowers were symbol of fertility). Top (faint/worn) is also decorated. It is in very good condition, considering its age. Inside has a small separate compartment on the upper left side. Please see photo of the inside, which is not of this piece, but typical of all blanket period blanket chests. Like in vast majority of blanket chests of this age, legs and some trim molding may have been replaced. Origin of this piece is Bohemia, Sudetten region, where the most beautiful painted armoires and blanket chests originated. It is contemporary of American "Pennsylvania Dutch" pieces made by German immigrants, who came to the United States from the above mentioned area in 18-19th century.
