This chess set was created by Antonio Castillo Teran in 1984 for Los Castillo of Taxco, Mexico. Included is a copy of the purchase receipt from Los Castillo, signed by Teran, from the original owner in 1984. There are no hallmarks and the silver content is unknown. Board measures 18 x 18 in (45.7 cm x 45.7 cm). Surfaces are tarnished and there are a handful of minor dents. Original wooden case is decorated with drawer pulls in the shape of the horse heads that adorn the knight pieces in the set. Antonio Castillo Teran opened his studio in Taxco around 1939. Los Castillo has trained many fine artists over the decades, and still operates today. The artist's cousin, Salvador Teran (1920-1974), worked for Los Castillo in the 1940s, prior to establishing his own studio in 1952. Additional images forwarded upon request. ( za- )
