FRANCE, Early 1800s This antique French silver over bronze religious candlestick is in the Louis XIV Style. What is so significant about this piece is that the chasing of the silver is very fine many of the raised ornaments being very small and intricate, down to a width of less than 1/16 of an inch. The top features an urn shape on a tripod pedestal. Beneath this is a three sided column with an ionic capital. The columns interior panels are decorated with two different vertical panels and ornamentations: the top panel with ornamentation going downward bears a tiny bellflower shaped floral basket with flowers, facing volutes with intertwining ribbons and a hanging bellflower. A central rosette separates the top and bottom panels . The bottom panel , with ornamentation going upward, has a fleur- de- lis surrounded by c-scrolls and bandwork ending in two bellflowers, one on top of the other. This portion rests upon a curved tripod group of panels bearing more margent of bellflowers surrounded by three graceful acanthus leaves. More acanthus leaves on another tripod base connect an ionic capital to the largest of the tripod panels. These raised oval panels depict religious faces. They are framed by shaped moldings on a granulated ground with ornamentation of acanthus leaves, ionic forms and stylized fleur-de-lys. The bottom corners of this tripod paneled base are volutes decorated with acanthus leaves, surmounting thee pawed feet. The magnificent chasing details of this silver over bronze religious candlestick are superb, even with the wearing of relief over the years.
Condition: European electrification; small hole in the body; one section of top molding missing; wearing of relief commensurate with age.
