Koto period Japanese Samurai sword Wakizashi with its original wooden dark brown lacquered (saya) scabbard.
DETAILS: slightly curved blade with a visible wave temper line (Hamon); the grains in the steel are also visible, the tang of the blade with one hole (mekugi-ana) is unsigned and has a black patina, the wooden handle is covered by ray skin with a pair of Menuki, Tsuba, Fuchi Kashira and very old wrapping.
CONDITION: the blade is in an unpolished condition and in my opinion is in good shape considering its age (Over 500 years old). The blade has no bends, cracks, etc. except for minor nicks and wear. The scabbard has some minor chips and cracks. The sword is very old, it most likely dates to the 13th century.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length with the scabbard: 37 cm (14 1/2 in). The total length of the blade including the tang is 41.3 cm (16 1/4 in). The width of the blade near the tang is 1 1/8 inches (2.8 cm). The cutting length of the blade is 31 cm (12 1/4 in).
