Unavailable
This extraordinary, ebonized commode a vantaux in the French Louis XVI style dates from the late nineteenth century, and is modeled after an eighteenth century design by Guillaume Benneman. His design from the 1880s was based upon the work of Joseph Stockel in the 1770s when he is known to have supplied works for the royal chateaus at Versailles and Fontainebleau. It measures 70" (5' 10") across, 36.5" tall and 26.5" deep (93 cm by 178 cm by 67 cm). It has a white marble top with rounded outset corners, frieze drawer in center lined with satin upholstery, two doors with interior fitted with six drawers, and extensive gilt bronze mounts. In the center is a roundel depicting satyr and cherub, and the sides also have roundels with bacchus scenes. At the front corners are reeded columns with acanthus leaf capitals.
