This is a nice, antique useable chince, or chincing iron. We don't see many of these, and they often have slightly different shapes from this one. This is used for driving the flag into the groove, so even though it looks much like a shipwrights chalking iron, is is move of a driver used in the finial fitting on the hoops on the barrel. Flag is basically river rush, or similar material that will expand in the joints of the barrel when the flag comes in contact will liquid inside the barrel. This iron has a nearly sharp edge that is about 1.5" wide and tapers to a near point at one end. It appears to be sand cast, then handle shaped at the forge. It's in good+ condition. A very hard to find cooper's tool. It came with a large collection of cooper's tools that we have for sale in seperate listing. This is perhaps one of the hardest to find of all the cooper's tools, most of the books on the subject don't even show a detailed picture of one.
