Antique Betel Nut Box ~ Large
Unavailable
This extra large antique bronze and copper betel nut box probably originated in the Phillipines. Betel nuts produce a mild stimulant effect when they are crushed and soaked in lime inside metal containers such as this. The box opens to reveal a lift out compartment with four separate soaking sections and space below for storing the betel nuts. Its ornate carved design and lift out upper container make this box a rare find. Box has wheels on the bottom and handles on the end that make it look like an ancient ark. Heavy oxidation, as expected, in some of the compartments from use and slaked lime residue remains as well. The heavy bronze lid appears to have cracked at some time, either during manufacture or through use, but has been skillfully mended. Some of the inlaid copper plating is missing as well, but overall this is a fine example of an early betel nut box.
