Antique French Renaissance Revival Faience Ceramic Grand Feu Vase Signed Comtet

Unavailable

This monumental French faience vase from the nineteenth century measures 37.5" (95.2 cm) tall and is signed "J. Comtet", after the fifteenth century artist active in Chambéry, France, as noted in the Benezit.  It has a baluster form and features lappet scrollwork at the rim and fleur-de-lis around the neck, and beautiful enamel painted male and female tavern figures in the renaissance style.  It has a pale green ground decorated with scrolling foliage, and is painted with a bar maid, musician, dancing patron, and pair of lovers. The shoulder features a band of lions and the lower section above the foot features a band of dragons and serpents.  There is damage, partially restored, at the rim as seen in our images.  We cannot rule out the possibility of other damages (such as hairline cracks or chips to the finish) nor restorations.  We are selling this item "as-is".
