Great pair of cast metal bookends depicting - Angelus - a painting by Jean-Francois Millet. Millets archtypical depiction of humility and devotion shows two peasants, who although poor and overworked, take the time to praise God. Their prayer is prompted by the tolling of the bell from the church background center.
The modeler of this cast tried his best to capture the atmospheric nature of the original. The feeling of simple piety definitely comes out. Bronzed finish with burnished highlights.
4-1/2 x 2 x 4-1/4 inches.
Very good condition. No damage. Some minor wear to the bronzed finish.
Circa early 1900s
