Anduze Style Urns from Provence, France H=22 3/4, Outside Diameter=21 3/8 Good Condition Minor Crazing to Glaze Mid 1950s These glazed Anduze re-edition garden urns exhibit many of the colors you associate with Provence. Anduze is a small, quaint town in the South of France. There have been potters working there for centuries, and they have spread a pottery style throughout France, (Anduze French Pottery) which began in France in the 1500s when terra cotta began to emerge as a material used by many artisans. Because of the expense of these pots, only the noble class could afford them as they were traditionally used in gardens. Consequently, during the period from 1500- the French Revolution, not many of Anduze pots were produced and sold. After the French Revolution, Vases dAnduze gained in popularity due to merchants, horticulturists and greenhouse owners purchasing them, as trees could be planted in them and brought indoors to protect them against frosts and freezing weather. As the popularity of Anduze pots spread, more French artisans made the style and added their own flourishes. One important note is that these pots were made in the mid-century years (1950 -1960) and were made to appear old and distressed. Antique Anduze pots have true patina to them, but ours are made with the patina baked on. Please contact us if you would like photos, video, or more information. Thank you, Le Louvre French Antiques
