26" Japanese Kutani Hichozan Meiji Ceramic Charger

Unavailable
This Japanese Dai Nippon ceramic charger in Kutani style is believed to date from the end of the Meiji period (1869-1912). It measures an impressive 26.5" (67.3 cm) in diameter and height of 4.5" high (11.4 cm), and features the images of five gentlemen gathered among bamboo trees, with a dramatic orange background. The rear carries three generic marks in the center for "Dai Nippon" (Kutani Sei or Zo). The three vertical marks on the right indicate the maker, Hichozan Shinpo Sei ( ·ÊµúɽП¦Ñu ), a trade mark used by Tashiro Monzaemon in Arita, where potters used the Hichozan trade name in the production and export of wares from the late Edo period through the Meiji period. Condition is excellent, with no signs of restoration or repair. This item resides with our client on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York and may be seen by appointment.
