To a fine and rare soft pine architectural fireplace mantelpiece. The moulded shelf retains the original gouged plate rail to the top. The shelf is supported by stepped mouldings and a belt course of punctuated dentilation. The mantel frieze is mounted with three tablets. The center one carved with oval fan patera. The end tablets are vacant and between the tablets are carved stylized hearts and quarter fans. All ornamental paterae have gouge carving to the exteriors. The tablets are supported on a moulded belt course. Below the jambs have applied pilasters with gouge carving and stepped plinths. The mantel surround has a moulded trim section to the interior and a half round to the exterior. The mantel retains small traces of the original Prussian blue paint and all in all the mantel is a desirable American folk art example.
