2003/971 Lynchburg, Virginia Poplar Fan Mantel c.1815-1825

Unavailable
To fine and rare large tulip poplar fireplace mantelpiece reported to have been removed from a period mansion in Lynchburg, Virginia. The moulded top shelf is supported by various step ped mouldings supported by a course of dentilation. The mantel frieze is mounted with five plaques carved with Adams' fan paterae. The end tablets are further carved to their returns. The tablets are support by a moulded band course, which in turn are supported by reeded tapered columns having turned capitals and bases which are footed on projected plinths. The hearth opening as well as the mantel exterior of the jambs are mounted with a moulded section. The mantel has been moved several times in its history and presently is stripped of paint and a darker mahogany hand finish applied. This mantel is a wonderful example of Virgina neo-classicism. The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting. NOTE: This mantle should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes. (#1488)
