2002/956 Virginia Georgian Mantel c.1790-1810

An interesting tidewater Virginia fireplace mantel of the circa1790-1810 period. This example has three moulded tablets applied to the frieze in the early neoclassic manner. The mantel legs or jambs have crossetted corner tops in the early Georgian style. It is not unusual to see two architectural periods incorporated into one mantel as found in tidewater Virginia. he mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting.
