2002/925 Philadelphia Neoclassic Mantel c.1810-1825

Unavailable
A fine and rare Philadelphia white pine and tulip poplar federal American fireplace mantelpiece. Below the original mahogany shelf are courses of moulding with three projections which agree with tablets applied to the mantel frieze. A gouge carved belt course crosses the frieze above the tablets and another course is stopped below by the central panel. The freize retains all of the original Welford composition enrichments which were applied at the time of the creation of the mantel. The jambs or legs are mounted with 3/4 engaged reeded columns having enthases with triple ring necks and composition enriched acanthys leaf and pearl trim. The columns are footed on turned bases above stepped plinths. The mantel opening or surround is mounted with moulded sections having turned mitre blocks to the top. A beaded trim covers the exterior sides of the mantel. Note: it is most rare to find an example in this condition, retaining the original shelf which was finished in a natural color. The composition is in good condition with a few small restorations to missing sections.
This mantel should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes.
