To a fine and rare American or European carved white marble mantel. The serpentine shelf is moulded and 2 1/4" thick! Below the mantel jambs are mounted with stylized ladies holding birds. They are contained in gothic revival canopies and paneled plinths. The mantel frieze is carved with roundels with children holding flowers and bundled wheat. The frieze is further carved with foliage which is centered with a keystone carved with an ancient Roman god of fertility. The hearth opening is mounted with a 3/4 fluted band and an inner running rope trim section. All of the ornamental elements have moulded bases and plinths at the bottom. The fine old ivory patina remains to the surface. It could have been made in New York City prior to the civil war or imported for a most important residence, which was located in Scranton, PA.
