To a fine and rare Chester County, Pennsylvania Neoclassic manner fireplace mantelpiece. This rich example is gouge carved with the addition of composition ornament appears to be from the Philadelphia shop of Robert Wellford. The arcaded shelf has waterleaf enrichment above chipwork swags and snow flake. Below the shelf is a course of dentilation with swag motif. The mantel frieze is mounted with three tablets. He center tablet with composition ornament of a female figure with horns of plenty filled with fruit. The two end tablets are vacant and surrounded with hand carved running rope trim. The rabbits or rebates between the tablets are filled with composition swags, bow knots and fruit centers. The mantel jambs or legs have pilasters filled with bell flower and bow knots. The pilasters are footed on projected plinths. The hearth opening is surrounded by a moulded trim with more hand carving. All in all this is a rare survival. The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork and coposition repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting.
This mantel should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes.
