1986/561 Pennsylvania Gouge Carved Mantel c.1795-1810

Unavailable
A fine and rare outside of Philadelphia gouge carved white pine fireplace mantelpiece. This example is a tour de force of folk art carving on a neoclassic mantel which has all of the Philadelphia architectural attributes. The mantel shelf has 3 projected surfaces which agree with applied tablets to the frieze. A course of gouge work crosses the shelves and a belt course of stylized dentillation is mounted below the shelf. The frieze tablets are richly carved in stylized neoclassic swags interrupted with flutes and circles. A plain belt course crosses the tablets and forms an upper capital to the end pilasters which are deeply reeded and footed on applied plinths. The hearth opening is carved with a punctuated running rope design that is centered. All in all, a beautiful example of small size and rich scale. The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting.
This mantel should be installed by your mechanic in accordance with all local fire and building codes.
