This is a 1929 first edition of Marcella.. A Raggedy Ann story. What a wonderful history behind these books too! Johnny Gruelle who actually illustrated for Grimms fairy tale books, had a daughter he loved with all his heart. Unfortunately she was in poor health so he entertained her with a cloth doll she found in the attic. He would make up adventures and stories for her. This book was the first book to include the character which in real lie was his beloved daughter , Marcella. :Marcella: A Raggedy Ann Story " was published in 1929 and acted as a memorial to her. What is sad is that she died because at school she was given the small pox shot without their consent. Many disagreed and said she really died of a heart condition. John Gruelle became an advocate of non-vaccination at that time. The Raggedy Ann doll is often found as a symbol used by and for the anti-vaccination movement.   One of the most controversial things you will see in this book is an illustration of a black mammy raggedy ann doll.    This book has 94 pages. There is some edge wear but it is in overall good condition. The pages are in great condition.       VintageSparkles offers Layaway on all our pieces regardless of which site it comes from. All layaway payments will need to be in the form of a check or money order only.
