This original oil on board entitled La Lecture is by the French painter
Louis Charlot (1878-1951). Artist board measures 22.5" by 25.5". Frame measures 29.75" by 33.5". Depicted is a young woman reading at a table on a porch or deck enclosed with wrought iron railing. This item comes from the collection of Roni Steinberg Sokoloff and resided in her former 63-acre estate in Bedford New York known as Cantitoe Farms. (The estate is down the road from Martha Stewart's home by the same name.) The work was purchased by Ms. Sokoloff in the early 1980s, and was appraised for insurance purposes by Sotheby's in 1998 for $5,000.
