18th Century Venetian Italian Gondola Boat Shaped Ceremonial Box -- Very Rare

$12,000.00
Quantity available: 1

Our client's rare, 18th century ceremonial walnut casket in the shape of a Venetian gondola is distinguished by its large size, craftsmanship, age and condition.  The base or hull of the gondola is shaped like a stylized scallop shell and has scrolling, gilt feet.  The top has glazed windows and reticulated cartouches depicting the carved figures of swans and gentlemen.

28 inches long, 18 inches tall, and approximately 8 inches deep.

Boxes of this kind were created and used in seaside cities such as Venice and Genoa  to display the ceremonial keys of the city that the chief magistrate would gift to important foreign visitors and dignitaries.

In good condition with scratches, rubbing wear, nicks, cracks and restorations. The top no longer fits snuggly but is definitely original. Inside carries the printed, inscribed name of its prior owner.
