Antique Old Sheffield Plated Wine Coaster. This coaster was made circa 1780.The method of decoration was called fly-piercing. The gradual squeezing out of the metal under the piercing tool had the effect of dragging down with it the surface of the silver, and so at the same time covering up the raw edges of the copper that otherwise with the process of saw piercing(used on silver) must have been exposed. This same machine was also used for pressing various patterns on Old Sheffield at this time,as you can see on this fine specimen. Also note the visable solder seam,on Photo number 2 which is another diagnostic feature of Old Sheffield Plate
