There are ten chairs, including two arms and a 56" diameter dining table with eight original leaves (four large and four narrow) that extends to 164". There is a beveled edge to the table top. A very slight shrinkage gap between the two halves has developed over the years when the top is closed. The skirt is beautifully burled and features carved fleur de lis. The top is held up by a massive carved split column in the middle and four fluted columns on each side. A center leg is exposed for extra support when the base separates and the leaves are installed. There are solid recessed brass castors on the base making the table easy to maneuver. The chairs have a beautiful design with incised and applied carvings and turned front legs. They have been recovered by a previous owner and are very solid, heavy, sturdy, and useable. Herter made many of the applied buttons and moldings on the table and chairs out of rosewood. The unique and exquisite combination of the oak and rosewood is something we have never seen before. We surmise that Probasco wanted all the furnishings of the house to be made of oak and Herter used the rosewood to "dress" it up and add an artistic elegance. Gustave Herter designed the interiors of the Oakwood in 1858. From page 227 of "Herter Brothers, Furniture and Interiors of the Gilded Age" we found this entry "Gustave appears to have supplied furniture for the house as well as designs for the walls and woodwork. A more prolonged relationship between the Herters and Probasco is suggested by an auction of Probasco's estate in 1899, which includes several items made and/or designed by Herter Brothers and dated as late as 1868." More information about the house can be seen at this link Henry Probasco House Some of the furniture from Oakwood was inherited by Mrs. John J. Rowe who was a Probasco. She sold many pieces of furniture with her home on Carnargo Club Drive in Indian Hill in 1975. The furnishings remained in the home of the buyers until they sold them to us. We have a notorized "Statement of Authenticity" that we received from the seller which we will provide to the buyer of this suite. The photo of the young boy came with it (see photo). "Henry Probasco Jr Aged 4 1/2 yrs for Aunt Margie" is written on the back. Gustave Herter is considered the finest designer of Renaissance Revival Victorian furniture.
