Antique 17th century European military sabre with slightly curved single-edged blade back edged towards the point and with narrow fuller bordering the back on each face. The forte is engraved with the bust of a Turkish Sultan in a turban and an Eastern European nobleman wearing a high hat with crane feathers on the front, and a sun, crescent moon, and stars. An iron half-basket guard of slender bars, comprising a hart-shaped side ring on the outside, framing a convex iron plate embossed with a spray of conventional foliage, and linked to the pommel by an outer hand-guard corresponding to a knuckle-guard, each with double-shaped central swelling and linked together by a diagonal, short downcurved rear quillon swelling at the tip, thumb-ring, brass pommel cast and chased as a lion's head and wire-bound wooden grip which is most likely a later replacement. Overall length: 75cm (29 1/5in).
