Vintage Parker 51 Special fountain pen desk set, in sleek black with a magnetized holder and a black glass base. The Parker 51 fountain pen has the reputation of being one of the finest pens and easiest to use fountain pens ever made. The Parker 51 was introduced in 1941 and produced until the early 1970's; the Parker 51 Special was introduced circa 1950. This 51 Special fountain pen has a hooded nib which allows the use of faster drying inks, and an aerometric filler which consists of a rubber ink receptacle and a U-shaped bar which is pressed. The pen is made from hard black plastic, with a silver-colored nib and decorative ring. Inside the pen, the metal barrel is inscribed "PARKER 51 SPECIAL, TO FILL PRESS RIBBED BAR FOUR TIMES, WIPE FRONT END, PEN POINT DOWN, WITH SOFT TISSUE. USE DRY WRITING SUPERCHROME INK. THE PARKER PEN CO. MADE IN USA." The pen sits in a black plastic holder with a magnetized metal ball on the end. The magnetized ball fits into a depression on a gold-colored metallic rectangle which is affixed to a black glass base. The magnetized holder can rotate to any position and can be removed from the base. The pen measures approximately 6 inches long. The glass base measures approximately .75 inch high, 5.625 inches wide, and 3.425 inches deep. This Parker desk set is in very good condition with light surface wear. The glass base has some minor chipping on the edges in four spots; the base is lined with green felt on the bottom. Please refer to the 4 photographs for appearance and condition.
