This is a good useable late 1800's single cutter hollow auger, to be used in your brace.  It is marked by the maker: "E.C. STEARNS & CO. SYRACUSE N.Y.  PAT. NOV. 23RD 80". (We believe the patent date is Nov. 23 1880).  This model is made to hollow 3/4" diameter, plus or minus about .02" with the current bushing in place, or 1.00" with the bushing removed.   It is cast steel, and has some pitting noted on the cast frame. The cutter position is adjustable, and is sharp.  The auger is in useable condition. There is  graduations on this model for depth stop.  The depth stop may not be original but is well suited for this application. The screws and all the adjustments are in working order also. The is no rust on this unit now, but has past signs of rust pitting on it, yet not in areas that would render it useless. It is about 6.25" long overall with a capacity of over .75" or 1.00" diameter. A nice clean antique hollow auger, by a well known early tool maker!
