Snell 2 Inch Diameter Auger Bit

Unavailable

This is a very clean, and sharp, usable antique 2" diameter auger bit!  This is the 2 auger bit by this maker we have seen is over 20 years of collecting and selling tools! This hand-auger bit drill is in amazingly good shape with a good lead screw, double spur lips and twist style, and a total of  19" long. We don't have a hardwood handle to fit the tapered square on the end, so we are selling this auger without the wood handle.  As you can see there is a nut and threads on the end to help secure the end stock into the handle. The threaded end in in good shape and has a 1/4-20 threaded end on it that increases the strength of the link design. This auger dates back into the late 1800's era before auger bits were for the most part made with a standardized square end stock taper.  Though most Snell auger bits have this somewhat steep taper angle, other manufacturers used other angles.  We have sold a number of these to timber frame carpenter who remove part of the taper and mount the 1/2" diameter shank into their boring machines.  The shank on this auger is about .503 to .527" diameter, larger near the square end.  The marking on the shank reads: "SNELL MFG. CO. 8 CAST STEEL".  I doubt this auger drill was ever used.  It's in really nice condition, no rust, a few tiny storage dings, otherwise in very good condition.
