Our lovely vase features abstract white glazed floral slip designs on a lavender colored ground by the admired Severes designer, Jeanne Levy (1894-1944). With the signature of the artist, 1929 Sèvres Manufacture Nationale France b stamp, impressed mark GT for gres tendre (soft sandstone), plus letter A and what appears to read in script, Cis.

Height: 6 in.  In good condition with some crazing.

Levy was born in Paris in 1894 to an Orthodox Jewish family from Alsace and studied at the Academy of Decorative Arts (Académie des Arts Décoratifs). She specialized in ceramics went on to work many years  for Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres. This piece is representative of the period when Sevres was under the direction of Georges Lechevallier-Chevignard from 1920 to 1939, who is known for hiring artists to help bring the firm's style into the modern age. A similar example can be found in the British Museum, museum #2000,0506.2.

Levy exhibited at the International Fair in Tel Aviv and in Paris. Her paintings were shown at the Salon des Artistes-Décorateurs, Salon des Tuileries, and Salon d’Automne. In 1931, she exhibited in the Parisian Exposition Colonial Internationale in the Erez Israel Pavilion.  In 1942 she was arrested by in Paris and imprisoned in the La Santé prison, then transferred to Drancy internment camp near Paris, and later deported to Auschwitz where it is believed she perished in 1944.
