Ruth Bernhard: Skull and Rosary
Signed on the mount, recto, below the print; signed, titled and dated with the photographer's (c) stamp on verso of the mount. Exact print date unknown, but the larger signature indicates a later print. Ansel Adams proclaimed Ruth Bernhard (1905-2006) the greatest photographer of the female nude. As one of the few women photographing other women, Ruth's nudes are more about form and light than eroticism. Ruth always loved the beauty of found objects, and her other large body of work (besides the female nude) consisted of objects of the common place, such as this work.
