Russell Jennings Spur Auger Bit Set & 3 Tiered Box
This is a very nice, clean, early 1900's antique set of extension lip spur auger bits with the tapered ends to fit the antique style hand brace chucks. The set was made by and marked "THE RUSSELL JENNINGS MFG. CO. CHESTER" and so marked "RUSSELL JENNINGS" on the drill shanks. This set comes with a very well made, solid 3-tiered wooden box that has individual slots for each size and a few extra to boot. These are all Russell Jennings pattern bits, all with the fine thread type lead screws and double spurs and twists. They are so marked, "RUSSELL JENNINGS" on the shank, and the number size on the tapered area. All have been in storage for years, but were dipped in a rust-ban which is a thin layer of oil based solution that leaves a light coating of a little bit sticky compound on each drill. I don't see any sign of use on these auger bit, all are sharp and ready to use, all appear to be full original lenghth with good lead screws. This can quickly be cleaned off with a cleaner like WD-40. The storage case is made of all medium softwood, with three compartments, one upper, one lower, one middle. Each section is very sturdy, each in good+ shape with good strong hinge and latch hardware (hardware like I've never seen before). There is some wear on the original varnish finish and some small dings and scratches, minor staining on the exterior mostly. The hardware on this box is steel or iron with some minor pitting noted, but none causing any issues. A very well known quality tool maker, and a nice example of their product!
