Art Nouveau Nordic Norwegian Throne Armchair
Best Offer
Our client's wonderful antique armchair carved of padouk and maple, circa 1890, of northern European origin, likely Norwegian, features exquisitely carved element including owl-form arm supports and crestrail surmounted by a pair of stylized Nordic masks. With x-form stretcher and its original casters and modern ribbed silk upholstery. Apparently unsigned.
The chair bears similarities to the designs and level of craftsmanship of Lars Kinsarvik (1846-1925), the admired designer of carved Nordic furniture who blended Art Nouveau style with interlacing geometries in what has been described as the Viking Revival or Nordic Revival style. See the similarities in the Nordic masks on the crestrail to the masks on the cabinet featured in the recent exhibition at the Frick Pittsburgh, The Scandinavian Home: Landscape and Lore, September 27, 2025 - January 11, 2026.
