Pair Antique Gilt and Slivered Bronze Marly Horse Sculptures

Unavailable

This is an exceptionally modelled, finely cast and patinated pair of Marley horse sculptures with rare gilt and silvered finishes, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, after the originals by Guillaume Coustou (1677-1746)  Each in very good condition. Unsigned. 20 lbs. each.

Commissioned by Louis XV in 1739, the original horses were sculpted in Carrara marble to adorn the Trough at the entrance of the Marly palace gardens. In 1794, they were moved to the Place de la Concorde at the very end of the Tuileries gardens. They were eventually moved to the Louvre with copies decorating the Concorde square.
