The sturdy, tapered blade is made of steel and is finely engraved on both sides TOLEDO within a pattern of cherubs, griffins, scrolls, and floral ornaments on the blackened ground.
The hilt comprised an ornate metal crossguard crisply cast in the form of a double-headed eagle, the coat of arms of Toledo, a grant of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (Charles I, King of Spain).
The eagle, bearing a heraldic shield with the arms of Castile and Leon, is surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
The wood grip is bound with wire, surmounted by the pommel as an imperial crown.
