Constructed out of beautifully grained curly maple, the antique day bed has an incised head board and foot board in the spool turned design, which was quite fashionable between 1825 and 1875, and referred to as country style furniture. The turnings became possible with the mandrel lathe and furniture makers started to include spool turnings on spindles, stretchers, tables, legs, bed post and bed frames. The spool turned design on this day bed features distinctive lathe-turned columns that resemble stacked sewing spools, hence the name spool turned. This distinctive design appears on its headboard, foot board, posts, legs, and decorative vertical slender posts above the head and foot rails.
