Antique Louis XVI Style Ormolu Bronze Andirons Firedogs Chenets by E.F. Caldwell
This pair of chenets by Edward F. Caldwell date from circa 1910, and are distinguished by their impressive height (28 in, 71 cm). In the form of torches on pedestals with animal paw feet and portrait plaques, with patinated putti figures holding gatherings of oak leaves and acorns.
The Edward F. Caldwell & Co. lighting firm in New York City is widely considered the premier American designer and manufacturer of lighting and decorative metalware of the late 19th and early 20th century. Their designs still decorate many landmark buildings throughout the U.S. and can be found in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other institutions across the U.S. They also received many prestigious commissions from institutions and distinguished individuals, including the Frederick W. Vanderbilt house in Hyde Park NY, the New York residences of Philip Lehman, Andrew Carnegie, John Pierpont Morgan, John Jacob Astor III, plus the Harvard Club of New York, Flatiron Building, University Club of New York, the New York Public Library, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Rockefeller Center, and St. Paul's Chapel.
