Antique French Model 1866 Chassepot Bayonet Unmarked With X Serial Number

Scarce antique 19th Century variant of the French Model 1866 unmarked Sword Bayonet for the Chassepot rifled musket with X serial number. The typical Yatagan shape blade with a wide, flat spine and broad single fuller. The spine and ricasso of the blade are unmarked. Ribbed brass grip, the mortice slot bears inside number “4”. steel crossguard with down turned guillion and muzzle ring is stamped with serial marks “X 70652”. Complete with correct steel scabbard stamped on inner side, “V 964 “and on the outer side with” N 10 7” above the suspension loop.

The bayonets with X letter serial marking were made from rejected parts. The letter X serial marks was only used for the to drill purpose weapons (rifles, carbines and hand guns) after 1873. This was a decision from the minister dated June 26, 1872.

MEASUREMENTS:
Overall length with the scabbard: 71 cm (28 inches).
Overnight without the scabbard: 70 cm (27.5 inches).

CONDITION: In good overall condition – good clean bayonet. The press stud, external spring mechanism and the scabbard locking spring work perfectly. The steel scabbards with minor dents.
