Antique French erotic snuff box, Religious theme
A rare early 19th century, French Antique snuff or tobacco box
Made in France from papier mache with the scene of the judgement of Solomon on the top of the lid after an engraving by Charlin
When opened up the underside of the lid reveals an erotic scene between a nun and a monk with a further nun spectating.
The colours are sepia and the main base is black lacquered.
The bottom of the box is lined with a cut out caricature of Georgian style, not original to the box but a nice feature added to further enhance the special nature of this scarce box.
It is circular in shape.
What is snuff? Snuff is a tobacco product that swept England and Europe in the early 18th century and is still around today in the shops, some people know it as chewing or smelling tobacco, which us dependant on the type of snuff either damp or dry but both made from cured tobacco leaves.
This incredible piece is in good condition with a few tiny nibbles to the side and base.
