A rare majolica portrait tile from the United States Encaustic Tile Company of Indianapolis, IN, c. 1886, depicting Shakespeare's Hamlet, finished in a translucent amber gold glaze. The tile is intaglio carved "Hamlet" and formed in very high relief; it is in very good condition with light wear to the right collar and the highpoint just above the eye, and lower edge fleabite, as shown.
