Antique 18th century Armenian Gold Gilt Silver Filigree Jeweled Reliquary Cross Khachkar

A rare, antique, 18th-century, Armenian, gold gilt silver, filigree jeweled reliquary cross pendant in the distinctive form of an Armenian Khachkar cross.

The cross pendant has a box-like structure designed to hold a relic. It comprises several separate elements of elaborate silver-gilt delicate filigree work, created with excellent precision by twisting and soldering wires with a scrolling pattern. The pendant has pearl-shaped knobs set with various colored faceted paste jewels.

The upper half of the cross is hinged and secured with a locking pin at the base. The top is fitted with a loop and a delicate twisted silver chain for suspension.

REFERENCES: In 2007, a similar Armenian cross made of silver gilt, filigree, and gemstones, dating back to the 18th century, was sold by Bonhams London Islamic & Indian Art for £2,400. Although it was not as big and delicate as the cross in question, it still fetched a good price. On that day, the exchange rate between British Pounds and US Dollars was 2.0026 USD, so the £2,400 cross was worth approximately $4,800. It is important to note that antique prices were generally lower fourteen years ago compared to current prices.

CONDITION: In its original condition, showing age and usage, the gold gilding is slightly worn with an old dark patina. No repairs or restorations.

Since the pictures were taken under studio lighting, the cross is darker and not as bright as in the photos.
